The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has present its highly valued Continuous Environmental Improvement (CEI) award for year 2002 to Guinness Ghana Limited (GGL).

The award was bestowed on the company at a ceremony marking Worlds Environmental Day 2003 at Akosombo, Eastern Region, last Thursday.

The EPA cited GGL for fully complying with the Environmental Assessment (Amended) Regulations of both 1999 and 2002 as a result of which EPA has earlier issued the market leader brewery with an Environmental Permit.

The award recognised GGL's innovative integration of cleaner production strategies in the environmental management system with accompanying substantial investments in process modernisation, product development and source reduction of process effluent.

Guinness Ghana has also promoted solid waste refuse as feed in the poultry industry and involved the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology in the development of a composite poultry feed product. The Okyehene, Osagyefo Amoatia Ofori Panin, chaired the World Environmental Day activities at which the Deputy Minister for Environment and Science, Hon. Matthew K. Antwi, presented the CEI award to Guinness.

The award citation signed by the Executive Director of EPA commended Guinness Ghana for demonstrating, through its environmental initiatives, that 'pollution prevention investment can have potential benefits and truly pays'.
