Excitement Over Glo Mobile

Many people thronged Glo Mobile customer centers in Accra on Monday to receive their reserved SIM cards contracted about a few months ago.

This followed the media launch of Glo Mobile’s network on Sunday at Movenpick Hotel, Accra by Ambassador Kabral Blay Amihere, Chairman of the National Media Commission (NMC).

He was supported by Adewale Shangowawa, Executive Director of Glo Mobile.

A visit by CITY & BUSINESS GUIDE to some of the Glo customer care centres revealed two separate queues: one for people who wanted to buy the SIM card for the first time while the other was for those who had reserved their numbers and were going for their SIM cards.

Some people who spoke to CITY & BUSINESS GUIDE expressed joy that Glo had finally arrived with many interesting packages.

They said Glo would save Ghanaian mobile subscribers from exorbitant networks.

According to them, services rendered by some existing network operators were expensive while their services become poor particularly during rainfall.

They commended the mouth-watering packages being offered by Glo Mobile and said that would engender competition and encourage other telecoms operators to improve their services.

“We are fed up with the bad services we have received so far from the existing telecom operators so we are indeed happy that Glo has come to our rescue,” one of the customers said.

The launch of Glo Mobile in Ghana makes it the sixth mobile operator in the country.

The company launched its services after a series of postponement.

Recently, the National Communications Authority (NCA) imposed a fine of $200,000 on the company for failing to launch its services on the stipulated date of April 20, 2012.

Glo Mobile Ghana, a subsidiary of Globacom International, a Nigerian-based telecom giant, currently has 1.5 million people, who have reserved their numbers on their 0233 number reservation series but it has the capacity to admit 10 million mobile users with its state-of-the-art equipment.

According to the Chief Operating Officer of Glo Mobile Ghana, George Andah, the network will be accessible in all 10 regions of Ghana.

Glo covers about 85 percent of land mass in the country and its reception covers 1,000 cities and towns in Ghana.

Mr. Andah said Glo is offering free and unconditional GH¢0.20p daily for the next 100 days to every customer – whether one makes calls or otherwise. In addition to that, subscribers will enjoy a 100 percent bonus on recharge plus and another bonus on incoming calls.

There will also be GH¢0.02p per minute calls for two special people as well as other bonuses for receiving or making international calls.
