FULL TEXT: Parliament's order to Energy Ministry, ECG to release dumsor timetable

It has come to light that the Parliamentary Select Committee on Mines and Energy, chaired by the Member of Parliament for Abuakwa South, Samuel Atta Akyea directed the Ministry of Energy and the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) to release a load-shedding timetable.

An April 6, 2024, document sighted by GhanaWeb indicates that the committee, after an engagement with key stakeholders in the power sector including ECG, the Volta River Authority (VRA), and the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC), instructed that, for Ghanaians to effectively plan their lives and not be gravely affected by the unstable power situation, the ECG and Ministry should release a timetable.

"The good people of Ghana are entitled to reasonable notice of power outages to enable them to plan their affairs around ECG's load-shedding timetable. The timetable will provide security of planning to companies and medical facilities that depend on ECG's distributed power for their efficient running.

"GRIDCo's professionalism and engineering prowess in giving reasonable notice of the availability of power to ECG is critical in putting together a credible load-shedding timetable," parts of the document read.

The committee further appealed to the president, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, to initiate measures to ensure harmony and solidarity among the key players in the energy value chain.

They also urged the Ministry of Finance to find creative ways of generating funds to purchase fuel to power the plants.

"The President should secure the synergy and harmony among the critical players in the power value chain, especially the Minister for Finance, the Minister for Energy, the Managing Director of the Electricity Company of Ghana, the Chief Executive of the Volta River Authority, and the Chief Executive of GRIDCo.

"The Minister for Finance should use every financial ingenuity to guarantee the availability of fuel to the generators, namely TAPCO, TICO, TTIPP, TT2PP (Siemens), KTPP, Ameri, T3, CENIT, SAPP 1961, SAPP 330, Kar Power, AKSA, Twin City, Bridge Power, Genser, and CENPOWER," excerpts of the communiqué read.

The communiqué comes amid a public demand for the ECG to issue a load management timetable for the public.

Despite President Akufo-Addo's claim that the situation has been resolved, parts of the country continue to endure sporadic power outages.
