Nana Yaw Boateng, Kwapong District Best Farmer, has commended the Government for increasing the producer price of cocoa.
He said the increment would motivate farmers to increase cocoa production in the country.
In an interview with the Ghana News Agency at Kwapong in the Asunafo South District of Brong-Ahafo Region, he urged farmers to take advantage of the increase and refrain from smuggling which could adversely affect the national economy.
Nana Boateng appealed to the Government to pay the remaining bonuses to enable the farmers pay their children’s school fees and attend to other responsibilities.
“Such efforts by the Government would encourage farmers to maintain their existing cocoa farms and increase their acreage,” he said.
Nana Boateng called on private cocoa buying companies to enforce the use of the Akuafo cheques in the payment of cocoa beans purchased to eliminate the practice of some of them using fake currencies to pay farmers.
“Many farmers are falling victims to the cheats in the system and government should act promptly to bring sanity into the system,” he said.
