Fire guts Melcom Stores

Accra, June 24, GNA - Fire swept through the North Industrial Area Branch of the Melcom Stores on Thursday morning causing damages running into billions of cedis.

The fire that started around 01.15 hours destroyed the main store and some of the adjoining warehouses at the premises but no injury or death was recorded during the four-hour fire.

Speaking to the Ghana News Agency (GNA) Mr. Samuel Yankey, Accra Regional Commander of the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS), said the office had a call from the Management of the Company around 01.40 hours to report on the fire outbreak.

Mr Yankey could, however, not disclose the cause of the fire, which, he said was yet to be ascertained.

Mr. Srinivasan P. Wabsan, General Manager of Melcom said the company would wait for the outcome of the GNFS investigations. Fire personnel from the Ghana Armed Forces assisted the GNFS to control the fire.
