First phase of Tafo market commissioned

The first phase of an 80-unit new market stalls of the New Tafo Market, constructed at the cost of GH¢190, 811.03, has been commissioned by the Eastern Regional Minister, Mr Antwi-Boasiako Sekyere .

The project was started in October last year and completed in five months, four months earlier than the stipulated nine months duration, and was funded with Urban Development Grant (UDG).

Addressing the people, the Minister said, the project would help improve economic activities in and around the East Akyem Municipality.

Mr Antwi-Boasiako said through the UDG, the East Akyem Municipal Assembly has undertaken projects such as a six-unit classroom block at Akyem Aboabo, three-unit classroom block at Akyem Odumase, and a slaughter house, a bio-gas system, a mechanized borehole, culverts and access roads at Kyebi.

He said as part of efforts to improve the performance of Metropolitan and Municipal Assemblies in public financial management, the Government has designed the Local Government Capacity Support Project (LGCSP) with a value of 175 million dollars, to provide financial support to the Local Government, Finance and Economic Planning Ministries and 46 Assemblies.

Mr Samuel Peter Asirifi, the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for East Akyem, explained that the good works of the Assembly over the years qualified them for the UDG, used to undertake various projects in the municipality.

He said the phase two of the rehabilitation of the market would take off after the market women had re-located to the new stalls.

Dasebre Boamah Darko the second, the Kukurantumihene, said the progress of every community rested on development, and called for the extension of social amenities to deprived communities.

Nana Yaa Agyekumwaa, the Tafo Market Queen, thanked government and all who made it possible for the project to be executed.

She called for the early start of the second phase.
