Fish feed mill to be set up - Sherry Ayittey

Government has disclosed plans to facilitate the establishment of a 40,000 metric tonne fish feed mill at Akuse in the Eastern Region.

This was revealed by the Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture Development, Sherry Ayittey, at the 32nd National Farmers’ Day celebrations at Kintampo on Friday November 4.

“In collaboration with a private company, we are facilitating a 40,000 metric tonnes of fish feed mill at Akuse; this factory will employ about 200 people. In addition, the fish processing factory at Elmina will also produce 10,000 metric tonnes of fish feed and this will further reduce the cost of operation,” she said.

Ms Ayittey also noted that government would import 10,000 metric tonnes of fish feed from China next year. The move is a collaborative effort between the Ministry of Fisheries and Aquaculture Development and the Chinese Embassy in Ghana to help ease the burden of fish farmers in the country.

“The Ministry of Fisheries, in collaboration with the Embassy of China, will receive 10,000 metric tonnes of fish feed next year for fish farmers,” she stated.

This year’s Farmers’ Day was on the theme: ‘Agriculture: A Business Response to Economic Growth’.

Robert Crentsil, 42, from Ajumako Enyan Essiam, in the Central Region, was adjudged 2016 National Best Farmer.
