Fishmongers at Tema Harbour angry

Fishmongers at the Tema Harbour say they are unhappy with comments by the Minister for Fisheries and Aquaculture, Mr Nayon Bilijo, that only fish from James Town is wholesome.

Speaking to GTV News, the women said the statement has had a negative impact on their sales.

The wholesomeness of fish across the country has been a source of worry for many.

This is due to the alleged use of chemicals and formalin by some fisher folks to preserve their fish and therefore last longer.

At a ceremony recently, the Minister for Fisheries and Aquaculture, Nayon Bilijo, showed his concern about the poor manner in which fish is preserved in the country and also said only fish from James Town can be certified as wholesome.

The Tema Harbour has been a hub for selling fish since its establishment however the statement by the minister has not gone down well with the fishmongers in Tema.

The women say the fish they sell at the Harbour is solely preserved with ice immediately it is offloaded from the boats without any preservatives detrimental to the health of consumers.

The fishmongers say they are unaware of the source of fact behind the minister’s speech but can however confirm that the fish at the Tema Harbour is absolutely wholesome for consumption.

They are therefore calling on the minister to retract his statement since their business has taken a nosedive.
