Asamankese(E/R), Nov. 19, GNA - A fruit-processing factory which is expected to be the third biggest in Africa is being constructed near Asamankese in the West Akyem District.

The factory, to be known as the Valley Fields Company is expected to produce orange and pineapple concentrates for export. This was announced by the West Akyem District Chief Executive, Mr Kwabena Sintim Aboagye when he addressed the District Assembly at Asamankese on Thursday.

He said the project had already provided employment for 80 people and the employment level was expected to rise to 180 persons when the factory starts production.

The DCE said the Company was hoping to operate on three shifts and the work force would then be around 450.

Mr Aboagye expressed the hope that the factory would make it possible for the able-bodied youth to stay in the area to work towards the development and expansion of the towns in the district. He said the factory would use the by-products of the timber mills such as sawdust to generate electricity for its operation and as a social responsibility, extend the electricity to adjoining communities and institutions free of charge or for a minimal charge. The DCE suggested that the District Assembly should buy shares in the company and offer the needed assistance to facilitate the smooth operation of the factory.
