GCB board appoints Daniel Owiredu as chair

The Board of the Ghana Commercial Bank Limited has appointed Mr. Daniel M. A. Owiredu as its Chairman effective Wednesday, October 22, 2014.

Mr. Owiredu is an immediate past President of the Ghana Chamber of Mines and also the Executive Vice-President and Chief Operating Officer of Golden Star Resources Limited, a Canadian mining company operating in Ghana.

A statement issued to the GNA on Thursday said Mr. Owiredu holds a BSC Degree in Mechanical Engineering from the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) and an MBA from Strathclyde Business School in Scotland, UK.

He had previously served as the Managing Director of the Bibiani Mine, Siguiri Mine in Guinea and the Obuasi Mine, all owned by then Ashanti Goldfields. He has also served as the Chief Operating Officer (West Africa) for Ashanti Goldfields Company and the Deputy Chief Operating Officer (Africa) for AngloGold Ashanti.

“An engineer with more than 30 years’ experience in the mining sector, 20 years of which was in senior management positions in Africa, Mr Owiredu rose through the ranks from Assistant Mechanical Engineer (upon joining Ashanti Goldfields), to become the first indigenous Chief Engineer of the underground mining operations at the Obuasi Mine” the statement said, adding that he was also instrumental in the construction and commissioning of the Obuasi Mine’s BIOX’r” plant; the biggest Biox plant in the world at the time.

Mr. Owiredu was also the leader of the executive task force which together with Johnson Harvey Consultants crafted the growth strategy for Ashanti Goldfields, is the chair of the Anglican University Council, and sits on various boards including the board of Golden Star Resources.
