GHACEM gets stone quarry

The West African Quarries Limited (WAQL), a subsidiary of GHACEM Limited, has held a grand ceremony in the Western Region to outdoor its new aggregate quarry site.

Located at Atta-Ne-Atta within the Shama District of the Western Region, the site has the capacity to produce an average 250 tonnes of aggregate per hour using a three stage mobile crusher.

The new aggregate quarry is aimed at providing projects in the Western and Central parts of the country with quality aggregate.

Francois Barbieux, Project Manager of WAQL, noted that the quarry was particularly targeted at projects in the Western and Central parts of the country to meet the ever-increasing demand for quality aggregate, especially for road construction.

Daniel Gauthier, a board member of HeidelbergCement Group, who doubles as the chairman of GHACEM board, said as the leading aggregate producer in the world, the group deemed it necessary to extend such production in the sub-region to ensure the supply of quality aggregate for construction purposes.

“As a subsidiary of GHACEM Limited, we hope the country will accord it the same trust as it has given to the GHACEM brand for the past 45 years and together continue being the nation builder.”

Present at the inauguration was Jean–Marc Junon, Chief Operating Officer of HeidelbergCement Africa, Morten Gade, Chairman of the WAQL board and also Managing Director of GHACEM, Dr. George Dawson-Ahmoah, Strategy and Corporate Affairs Director of GHACEM and WAQL, and Noble Biney, Plant Manager of WAQL-Peposo and other board members of WAQL.

Also present was the Western Regional Minister, Ebenezer Kwadwo Teye Addo, who represented Vice-President Kwesi Bekoe Amissah-Arthur.

The Vice President said Government was particularly happy because the project will help to reduce the unemployment rate in the country.

Mr. Gade said the addition of a new business into the company’s portfolio was a manifestation of its quest to become a one-stop-shop for quality building material “particularly cement and aggregate for nation building.

In an interview with the media, Dr. George Dawson-Ahmoah emphasized that WAQL, a sister company to GHACEM, will join hands and continue with its corporate social responsibility programmes, notably the GHACEM Cement Foundation, which distributes free cement annually to deprived communities in the country.
