Tema, Sept. 15, GNA - GHACEM on Wednesday presented a double cabin pick-up to the Ghana Standards Board (GSB) to help strengthen the board's activities of monitoring the weight of bagged cement on the market.

Mr Bjarne Schmidt, Managing Director (MD) of GHACEM handed over the keys of the 140 million cedis vehicle to Mr Ben Kuma, Chairman of GSB Board at the premises of GHACEM in Tema. Mr Schmidt said his company produces cement according to standard weight, which is between 49.5 and 50.5 kilogrammes per bag. He noted with satisfaction that GHACEM had put in place a computerized system at both factories in Tema and Takoradi.

Mr Schmidt regretted however that, in spite of GHACEM's conformity to standard weight, the weight of the cement is usually reduced after leaving the factory. He was optimistic therefore that, the vehicle would help GSB to play its role effectively to ensure that underweight cement on the market is stopped. "We want to ensure that cement sold on the market has the right weight of 50kg per bag and not less," the MD stressed. He appealed to GSB to ensure that the perpetrators were made to face the full rigour of the law.

Mr Nimo Ahinkorah, Executive Director of GSB expressed the board's appreciation to the donor for the wonderful gesture. Mr Ahinkorah reiterated GSB's determination to ensure that products on the Ghanaian market conformed to international standards. "We are going to strengthen our task force and make it a formidable one, and help bring sanity into industries," he assured.
