GIFEC supports Ghana Blind Union

The Ghana Investment Fund for Electronic Communication (GIFEC) on Tuesday donated 42 computers and accessories valued at GH¢71,000.00 to seven educational institutions with visually impaired students through the Ghana Blind Union.

The beneficiary institutions are; Okuapeman Senior High School (SHS), Wa SHS, Adidome SHS, Cape Coast School for the Blind, Mawuli SHS, Ghana National School, and Johan SHS.

Mr Kofi Attor, Chief Executive Officer (CEO), of GIFEC who presented the equipment, noted that government’s school connectivity project, which involves providing educational institutions with high speed computers, printers, scanners, projectors and servers and linking them with internet access, is non-discriminatory.

He said the donation was to help the implementation of the ICT policy of the Ministry of Education, which makes the teaching of computer skills compulsory at the basic through SHS.

He said GIFEC is supporting the Ministry of Education by deploying facilities in educational institutions to aid the academic transformation of students, including people with disabilities.

Mr Attor said the visually impaired should not be left out in the ICT revolution, hence government’s commitment through GIFEC to improve computer literacy and equip students with ICT skills and knowledge to function effectively in today’s knowledge society.

GIFEC through the education connectivity project has fully furnished and equipped ICT laboratories with accessories, and Internet access in 38 colleges of education, 27 technical schools, 10 national youth development institutions and 37 National Vocational Training Institute centres.

The rest are 293 SHSs, 62 nursing/ midwifery training colleges, three agricultural colleges, 25 community development schools, three opportunity industrialisation centres, 10 junior high schools, whilst more than 6000 laptops have been provided to basic schools which do not have the infrastructure for ICT education.
