GMA/GACC introduce Short Code for reporting corruption

Global Media Alliance (GMA) in partnership with the Ghana Anti Corruption Coalition (GACC) has launched the first ever Short Code for reporting corruption in Ghana.

The short code, 1721, is active on all networks, while another, 1821, is exclusive to using Airtel network.

A statement issued by the GMA and copied to the Ghana News Agency over the weekend said the project is supported by Star-Ghana.

It said the introduction of the short code was a result of Speak up project joint campaign developed by the GMA and the GACC to educate Ghanaians on anti-corruption laws.

The Speak up project is an accountability Media watch initiative which has been designed to encourage Ghanaians to stand and speak against all sorts of corruption acts manifesting in education and health sectors through live on-air dialogues.

The statement quoted Mr. Akwasi Agyeman, Managing Director of Global Media Alliance as saying: As a broadcasting firm, it is our utmost responsibility to effect change in the community in which we operate.

With the introduction of the new anti corruption short code, which happens to be the first in Ghana, the public can easily report through text messaging.

He explained that with the mechanism of reporting through the short code: Anyone who comes across any corrupt act can just send a text with a brief detail to the short code 1721 on all networks and 1821 on Airtel only.

He added that the message should be prefixed with the word Speak before sending it to the designated short codes.

He encouraged Ghanaians to use the short code to report corruption, and also contribute to the Speak up program aired on e.TV and Happy FM.
