As part of efforts to increase tax compliance among the citizenry, the Ghana Revenue Authority has resorted to vibrant tax education nationwide as the Authority marked tax month in the month of August.
The GRA aims to bridge the understanding gap and demystify taxation, with the hope that this will lead to increased compliance with tax filing and payment.
The Authority has engaged micro, small, and medium-scale entrepreneurs (MSMEs) at the Tema Community 1 Main Lorry Station as part of recent exercises to strengthen the relationship between traders and tax administrators.
A key article in this sensitization exercise was the Modified Tax System, an innovative, simplified means of capturing MSMEs into the tax net.
The Area Director for Accra East, Assistant Commissioner Joseph Asare, while speaking on Eye on Port said, “The modified taxation is in three levels, we have the very small ones, also known as macro whose income is up to GH¢20,000, second level is GH¢20,000 and above and then we have the third level which is also known as cash basis, which refer to businesses that mostly render services. This helps us to keep records”.
He also touched on innovative methods the Ghana Revenue Authority has adopted to improve tax administration, as well as, more importantly, convenient ways of filing and paying taxes.
“These days, tax payers do not walk to our offices to file and pay, they file and pay online. Even our clearance certificate which used to be accessed from the office is now accessible on our portal”, he stated.
