The Ghana Standard Board (GSB) has begun its programme of certifying selected imported goods before they are displayed for sale to the public.
The selected goods include food, drugs and electrical appliances considered by the GSB to be in a high ? risk group.
In consultation with the Ministries of Finance and Economic Planning, and Trade and Industry, and with assistance from the World Bank, GSB has also started registering all importers and obtaining the contact address of their business partners. This will enable GSB to enter into direct negotiations on the details of the certification process.
These facts were disclosed in separate interviews with the Acting Executive Director of GSB, Mr Lawrence E. Yankey, and Mr Peter K. Fleku, Director of Special Projects (Critical Examination).
Mr Fleku said the registration of importers in itself was an indication that ?the idea was on a sound footing.?
He explained that ?the registration forms spell out the details of the importers business partners, so that the Board, can begin negotiations with them independently.?
