The Ghana Used Clothing Dealers Association (GUCDA) has raised concerns over what they describe as a surge of misinformation regarding Ghana’s secondhand clothing trade.

In a statement issued by the Association on September 25, 2024, they mentioned that the controversy stems from international reports, largely originating from Europe, wrongly portraying secondhand clothing trade as a major contributor to environmental degradation in Ghana.

The association further questioned the transparency of the OR Foundation’s $15 million funding from Shein, a global fast-fashion giant, suggesting it is part of a broader agenda that could undermine the livelihoods of millions of Ghanaians.

GUCDA pointed that the reports claimed secondhand clothing, commonly known as “Obroni Wawu,” not only harms the environment but also poses a threat to local industries and the economy.

However, the Association clarified that the secondhand clothing trade industry serves as an economic lifeline for thousands of traders, wholesalers, and market vendors, thereby supporting Ghanaians through the provision of affordable clothing while enhancing entrepreneurial efforts.

“The secondhand clothing trade has the potential to contribute to sustainable development by integrating innovative waste management solutions,” the association said.

“We advocate for policies and partnerships that prioritise Ghana’s economic interests and ensure that our communities are supported. The secondhand clothing trade is complex, and its challenges should not be oversimplified or misrepresented,” the association emphasised.
