Cuba’s Deputy Minister for Public Health, Dr. Marcia Cobas Ruiz and her delegation has paid a courtesy call on Foreign affairs minister, Hon Charles Wiredu on Monday, January, 21 to strengthen economic ties and sign a health agreement.
She assured of the country’s continuous commitment to enhance bilateral affairs with Ghana.
Dr. Marcia Cobas Ruiz said the relations between Ghana and Cuba which has been in existence for 60 years has been very fruitful particularly in terms of academic services and medical cooperation.
Mrs Ruiz then assured that her country would continue to liaise with Ghana in the health sector adding that Cuba is willing to support the country’s industrialisation agenda.
Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, Hon Charles Owiredu in his remarks, recalled the long standing bilateral relations between Cuba and Ghana and called for further cooperation between the two countries.
He expressed appreciation to the Cuban government for supporting the health sector of several African countries including Ghana, offering services to rural and under-privileged communities in Africa.
Mr Owiredu again applauded their contributions to the human resource development of Ghana, particularly in the area of education from which more than 3,000 Ghanaians have benefited.
“Ghana is happy to be cooperating with Cuba, having established diplomatic relations. I can easily make mention of the support that you’ve provided in our health delivery as a country. Ghana is fortunate to be having this arrangement with you where you’ve sent so many medical doctors to help us in areas where we lack doctors to help in the delivery of healthcare. The level of training that our medical students receive in Cuba is also overwhelming. Over 3000 students so far have been trained in Cuba as medical doctors”, he stated.
The delegation is scheduled to visit Ghana from 20th to 22nd January 2019 to negotiate on Cuba’s indebtedness to Ghana, strengthen economic ties and also inform the country about its proposal to celebrate the 60th anniversary of Ghana-Cuba diplomatic relations by organising special events to mark the occasion.
