Ghana is ITF rep for Africa

Mr Daniel Owusu-Koranteng, General Secretary of Maritime and Dockworkers Union (MDU) of Ghana, has been elected to serve on the Steering Committee of the Dockers’ Section of the International Transport Workers’ Federation (ITF).

He is one of four people representing Africa and the Arab World.

Mr Owusu-Koranteng was also elected to serve on the Fair Practices Committee of ITF, which sets standards for working conditions of Seafarers and Dockworkers in the maritime industry.

The election took place at the 43rd Congress of ITF held on the theme: “From Global Crisis to Global Justice: Transport Workers Fighting Back” held at Sofia, Bulgaria at the latter part of 2014.

The meeting adopted a four-year programme; focusing on organising key hubs and corridors; leveraging key industry players; activating mass union membership and responding to geographic shifts.

One key focus of the congress was the right to strike as workers across the globe continue to struggle for better rights and working conditions.

ITF is a global union of federations of transport workers’ trade unions founded in 1896 and currently has 700 member-organisations in 150 countries.
