Ghana's national telecom company has placed a $3 million equipment order as part of an expansion of its wireless broadband network.

Israel's Alvarion Limited announced Tuesday it had received an order from Ghana Telecom for its eMGW equipment, which will be used to expand Ghana Telecom's broadband system beyond the capital city Accra.

"Expanding our broadband wireless network with eMGW is a direct result of customer demand from both business and residential users," said Jarle Rekve, Ghana Telecom's CTO. "As we expand our Accra network, we will continue to connect tens of new customers each day, while preparing for deploying broadband wireless networks in additional cities in Ghana."

Alvarion's eMGW is a fixed point-to-multipoint wireless system designed to bring voice and data services to home and business customers. The company said the circuit-and-packet switching capability has attracted customers from 60 countries.
