Ghana to roll out 5G network services within six months – Communications Minister

The government of Ghana is set to roll out 5G network services across the country.

According to the Minister of Communications and Digitalisation, Ursula Owusu-Ekuful, the rollout of this transformative measure will be completed within the next six months.

She explained that Next-Gen InfraCo (NGIC), which has been granted the 5G license, will soon launch its internet services nationwide.

Elaborating on the development, the sector minister speaking at a press briefing on May 30, 2024 mentioned that NGIC consists of a consortium established between the government of Ghana and seven other participating partners.

These partners include Ascend Digital, K-NET, Radisys, Nokia, Tech Mahindra, and two telcos – AT Ghana and Telecel Ghana.

“NGIC’s equity will be held by the people of Ghana, Ascend Digital, K-NET, all mobile operators in Ghana, and other private investors, including technology providers who may wish to join the consortium,” Ursula Owusu-Ekuful explained.

She also stated that the global tech giant Microsoft has shown interest in participating in Ghana’s 5G infrastructure project, with discussions scheduled to take place soon.

The government believes that the introduction of 5G internet services aligns with its broader digital agenda and financial inclusion efforts.
