A survey by Gallup, an American multinational research agency, has found that Ghanaian workers are among the top four most stressed workers in Sub-Saharan Africa.
According to the report, which is dubbed "2023 Gallup’s State of the Global Workplace," Ghana’s position is a result of Ghanaian workers experiencing stress daily due to stress-inducing work environments.
The top four countries on the list of countries with stressful working environments were Chad, which took the 1st position with 58% of its workers experiencing stress daily, followed by Uganda at 2nd with 57%, and Tanzania, 3rd with 56%.
Ghana came in 4th with 54% of the country’s workers working in stressful environments every day.
The survey also indicated that on average, 46% of workers in Sub-Saharan Africa experience daily stress, with nearly equal percentages among male and female workers.
Employers in the region were advised to address employee stress, as it significantly affects productivity and performance, through engagements, as it plays a crucial role in reducing stress, outweighing the impact of work location.
"While the debate over remote, hybrid, or on-site work continues, employee engagement remains paramount in reducing stress levels. The flexibility of remote work offers autonomy and well-being, valued highly by today’s workers," Gallup stated.
Gallup conducts its surveys by gathering responses from 1,000 individuals in each country or area, using a standard set of core questions translated into major local languages.
The data reflects the responses of employed adults aged 15 and older.
The report underscores the importance of addressing workplace stress and promoting employee engagement to ensure a healthy and productive workforce in Sub-Saharan Africa.
