Ghanaians asked to join credit unions

Ghanaians have been asked to join credit unions in their communities, workplaces and churches so as to improve their lives.

Ralio Kyaawileniba Bakers, the new Brong-Ahafo Chapter Manager of the Ghana Co-operative Credit Unions Association (CUA) Limited, made the call in an interview with DAILY GUIDE during the 2013 Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the Regional Chapter of CUA held in Sunyani last Wednesday.

The AGM was attended by over 100 participants, mainly board chair persons and managers of the over 40 recognised credit unions in the region.

Currently, the Brong-Ahafo Chapter of CUA has a total membership of over 93,000, which increased from 65,000 in 2012 to 93,495 at the end of 2013.

Mr. Bakers, who promised to do everything possible to improve and expand operations of credit unions in the region, said the credit unions would meet the needs of people, especially those in the rural areas.

Mr. Bakers takes over from Emmanuel Coffie, who has been appointed as the Deputy General Manager of CUA for Operations.

In a report, the Chapter Board Chairman, Charles Assua-Yeboah, disclosed that the net surplus for the Chapter recorded GHC27,786 in 2013, representing an increase of over 30 percent over the previous year.

This, he said, was a reflection of a prudent financial management adopted by management.

Mr. Assua-Yeboah mentioned that the Brong-Ahafo Chapter would host this year’s International Credit Union (ICU) Day in Sunyani, during which over 2,000 delegates from all over the country would converge on the city on October 18 for the conference.

He added that there are seven distressed societies and 20 study groups currently being monitored and revived.

The Chapter Board Chairman also said work on a building project had reached an advanced stage.
