The Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod) has engaged the University of Mines and Technology (UMaT) as part of stakeholder consultations on a proposed programme to formalise artisanal and small-scale mining (ASM) operations and improve access to financing.

The proposed ASM Formalisation and Financing Support Programme is scheduled for implementation in 2027 and is intended to promote responsible mining practices while providing structured financial support to operators in the sector.

The engagement was led by GoldBod’s Deputy Chief Executive Officer, Richard Nunekpeku, Esq., with a UMaT delegation led by its Vice-Chancellor, Professor Bernard Kumi-Boateng.

Nunekpeku explained that the programme formed part of a broader government intervention to formalise small-scale mining operations, improve access to financing and encourage responsible mining.

He stressed the importance of gathering input from key stakeholders before the proposal is considered by Cabinet and Parliament.

Professor Kumi-Boateng, meanwhile, pledged UMaT’s technical expertise to support the development and implementation of the programme.

Further consultations are expected to involve the Minerals Commission, the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources, the Minerals Income Investment Fund (MIIF), the Environmental Protection Authority (EPA), the Water Resources Commission and other relevant stakeholders.

The consultations are aimed at gathering technical and institutional input to help shape the proposed programme ahead of its planned implementation in 2027.
