Mr William Prince Ankrah, Board Chair of the recently launched mine workers’ Golden Pride Savings and Loans Limited (GPSL), says the company is ready to make meaningful in-roads to attain universal banking status in record time.

“The pride in the establishment of Golden Pride has always resonated in our desire to build a financial dominion that will respond to the myriad of needs of our citizenry and beyond,” he said.

Mr Ankrah, who is also the General Secretary of the Ghana Mine Workers Union (GMWU) of the Trades Union Congress, was speaking at the official opening of the GPSL at Obuasi in the Ashanti Region, which was launched by the Vice President Paa Kwesi Bekoe Amissah-Arthur.

The GPSL, according to Mr Ankrah, is a carefully thought-through initiative of GMWU purposed to offer competitive banking products as well as financial advisory and literacy support to its clients, particularly within and around mining communities.

He said Obuasi became the obvious choice not just for the reason of it being the pivot of mining activities in West Africa, but as a foothold to establishing the much needed and easily accessible bespoke financial services to the often marginalised peri-urban and rural communities in the country.

“This obviously is a standard setting and trail blazing innovation that we trust will stimulate other financial service providers to tread,” Mr Ankrah said.

He said boldness produced genius, power, and magic and through that they would tread the path of development with confidence, their challenges with hope, and discern the opportunities therein to help build communities. “Golden Pride is berthed to channel the realization of all these aspirations,” he added.

Mr Johnson Boadi Asamoah, Golden Pride Managing Director said: “We are poised to be an institution that is synonymous with business set-ups in all parts of the country.”

He said GPSL was not just adding another edifice to the landscape of Obuasi, but “rather we see the building as a catalyst to bring revolution in the way SMEs in peri-urban centres needed to engage with Golden Pride as an excellent provider of financial services to help grow the local economy thereby creating sustainable employment sources.

“We have what it takes to stand out by developing products and services to meet the financial aspiration of the SMEs particularly in the peri-urban centres.”
