Government to establish mortgage desk to address housing challenges – SHC MD

The Managing Director of State Housing Company, John Bawah, has hinted at the government’s move to create a mortgage desk to make access to mortgages easier and more accessible to Ghanaians.

He noted that this initiative will create opportunities for Ghanaians to explore affordable housing options.

Bawah added that this forms part of his office’s efforts to bridge the housing gap in Ghana.

He spoke on the sidelines of the Ghana Green Building Summit 2025 on April 10, 2025, under the theme: "Re-Imagining Buildings and Cities for Economic and Social Prosperity."

He said, “Two specific things that we are doing very quickly: One is establishing a mortgage desk. A mortgage specialist is joining our team to help our buyers access mortgages at competitive rates to purchase our properties.

“Secondly, we had our first meeting with Commercial Bank to help finance purchases for homebuyers as well as finance the construction of our projects. We are looking forward to these interventions delivering the results we’re aiming for, making it easier for Ghanaians to access affordable housing,” he added.

The SHC MD noted that the government is taking the lead in implementing green and sustainable housing initiatives.

He also acknowledged that, although change can be difficult for the average Ghanaian, innovative and sustainable building practices will gradually be adopted.

He said, "Technically, State Housing Company is a real estate developer, just like all the others. Our only difference is that we're owned by the government and the people of Ghana. So, how do we encourage others to do the same? We lead by example. Our ministry is the overarching body in charge of real estate and housing development.

"And so, the ministry has several agencies that regulate and design policy for the industry. The direction will come from the ministry on the ground. We are the pacesetters," Bawah noted.

He added, "Whatever the ministry is trying to introduce into the market, we need to take the lead on that. This way, we can pull everyone else along with us. That’s how we intend to do it."
