Hairdressers urged to upgrade skills

Hairdressers have been advised to keep upgrading their skills to learn modern trends in their profession to be able to take better care of their clients and to also protect their health when they visit their saloons.

Ms Jane Boakye Mensah of Oyska Institute of Cosmetology gave the advice at a two-week skills training workshop for 20 members of the Ghana Progressive Hairdressers and Beauticians Association (PHBA) in the Eastern Region at Amamfrom in the Akuapem North District.

The workshop, aimed at helping to upgrade the skills of the participants, was sponsored by the Council for Technical and Vocational Education Training (COTVET) through the Skills Development Fund (SDF).

She explained that at the time many of the participants completed their training, most of the current skills used in taking care of the hair, were not in the system, and so it was important that periodically, hairdressers upgraded their skills to be able to apply new knowledge to take care of their clients.

Ms Mensah explained that, with the development of the country, many women are growing cautious of their health, and it is important that hairdressers know what hair chemicals they have to apply to different hair textures, to ensure that their clients leave their saloons well satisfied and without any health challenges as a result of their hair care.

The Eastern Regional President of the Association, Mrs Regina Boakye, said the training had been very beneficial to members of the Association, and expressed the wish to see such training extended to other professionals.

Ms Felicia Sakyi, one of the participants, said she had learned a lot from the training, including even how to prepare some hair products from local materials.
