Handle salary issues with care -CSA cautions Govt

Nkawie (Ash), Dec 7, GNA - The Civil Servants Association (CSA) has cautioned the Government to handle salary issues with care.

The Association said picking some sections of labour for special treatment just because they had bared their teeth was not the best way to tackle the issue.

Alhaji Yakubu Ziblim, National President of CSA, who gave this caution, pointed out that there was already in place the Ghana Universal Salary Structure for all public service workers.

Preferential treatment for some sections of workers, therefore, was an invitation to the neglected sections such as the CSA to also bare their teeth for better salaries.

Commenting on the granting of salary increases to a section of public workers, who threatened to go on strike at Nkawie at the weekend, Alhaji Ziblim, who is also the Atwima District Co-ordinating Director, therefore, called on the Government not to allow itself to be cowed into increasing salaries by strike action.

He said for instance that about a month ago the University Teacher Association of Ghana (UTAG) and the Polytechnic Teachers Association of Ghana (POTAG) were given new salary scales to the neglect of some other public sector workers.

Just two weeks ago, Alhaji Ziblim said, health workers were also given 30 per cent salary increment.

He emphasised that Civil Servants and teachers, who worked in some of the remotest areas than health workers also needed the same treatment but said Civil Servants had decided to use dialogue instead of strike action to press home their demand.

Alhaji Ziblim said a new salary structure for Civil Servants would be one of the critical issues to be discussed at the Executive Committee meeting of the Association to be held soon.
