Honour your tax obligation to secure your future – NCCE

The National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) has appealed to citizens to honour their tax obligations to enable government raise enough revenue to carry out developmental projects.

Madam Akua Zakaria, the Wa Municipal Director of NCCE made the appeal during a tax education programme with members of the Ghana Private Road and Transport Union (GPRTU) in Wa.

She explained that taxes allowed government to carry out social services such as the building of schools, hospitals, road infrastructure and extension of electricity to rural communities among others.

Madam Akua noted that the social services could only be provided adequately if citizens honoured their tax obligations regularly and promptly.

The NCCE Wa Municipal Director noted that as members of the GPRTU, poor road network in the region was certainly of major concern to them as it had a major impact on the lifespan of their vehicles

She added that such bad roads could only be maintained if they all paid their taxes no matter how small it may be, adding that Chapter Six (6) Article 41, paragraph (j) of the 1992 Constitution of Ghana enjoined citizens as a civic duty, to declare their income honestly to the appropriate and lawful agencies and to satisfy their obligations.

Madam Akua said even the Holy Bible and Quran equally acknowledged the importance of payment of taxes by citizens, adding therefore that payment of taxes was not just a constitutional mandate but also a religious obligation that must be honoured by all citizens and all believers.

The tax education programme which is aimed at increasing national revenue mobilisation through tax collection was on the theme: “Our Taxes, Our Future” and was attended by 30 members of the GPRTU branch in Wa.
