Ghana’s cedi notes have several security features that can help you distinguish a genuine note from a counterfeit one. Most of these features can be checked easily by feeling, looking at and tilting the note.

Feel the note

Run your fingers over the portrait, edges and numbers on the note. On a genuine cedi note, you should be able to feel raised printing in these areas because the ink is applied more thickly than on other parts of the note.

If the note feels completely smooth, examine it carefully.

Hold it up to the light

Hold the note up to the light and look for the watermark and security thread.

You should also see parts of an image printed on the front and back come together to form one complete picture. If the two parts do not align properly, check the note carefully.

Tilt the note

Tilt the note from side to side and observe the security features.

On GH¢10 notes and higher, you should see the security image change or move when the note is tilted. The GH¢100 and GH¢200 notes have special 3D security features that appear to move as the notes are tilted.

Check the size

Cedi notes come in different sizes depending on their denomination. Check whether the size of the note corresponds with the denomination printed on it.

Look for hidden features

Some security features are difficult to see with the naked eye. A magnifying glass can help you identify tiny words and microtext printed on the note.

Ultraviolet (UV) light can also reveal security features that are not normally visible.

What to do if you suspect a note is fake

If you suspect that a cedi note is counterfeit, do not spend it or pass it on to someone else. Report it to the police as soon as possible.

You can also contact the Bank of Ghana for assistance in determining whether the note is genuine.

If you remember where and when you received the note, provide that information to the authorities. It could help them trace the source of the counterfeit money.

To protect yourself, remember these simple checks: feel the note, hold it up to the light and tilt it to examine its security features.
