Huge police presence at Tema as shippers and freight forwarders protest over exploitative practices

It's a Red Tuesday as freight forwarders, shippers, and trade associations have gathered at Tema to protest what they see as over exploitative practices by shipping lines in the country.

Dressed in red to show their anger, they held up placards with messages such as "show face or no charge," "scrap local charges in US dollars," "scrap demurrage on weekends and public holidays," and "Maersk line stop blocking agents for no reason."

Their grievances include illegitimate charges, inefficient release processes, weekend and holiday demurrage fees, delays in processing refunds, and blocking of agents.

Their first stop was at MSC to present their petition and relay their concerns to the shipping line.

The protest seeks to address a practice in which shipping lines, contrary to the Customs Act of 2015, are engaging in customs brokerage, sidelining freight forwarders and monopolizing services in a manner that the association views as anti-competitive.
