Insurers donate to Accident Unit

Accra, Nov. 22 GNA - The Ghana Insurers Association on Wednesday presented a cheque of 50 million cedis to the Accident Unit Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital to provide better facilities in the ward. Presenting the cheque to the Hospital, Mr Mahama Emmanuel Baba, President of the Association, said most insurance claims were due to road accidents hence the need to support the accident unit of the Hospital.

He said the association recognized the difficulty faced by both patients and staff of the Hospital and the donation was a token of appreciation for the good work the doctors and nurses were doing to save the lives of accident victims. Receiving the cheque Dr Emmanuel Kwabena Osei, Head of the Accident Unit, said motor accident constituted about 90 per cent of cases brought to the Unit.

He, therefore, cautioned pedestrians and motorist to be careful on the roads.

Dr Kwabena Osei said the Unit faced many problems like inability of patients to settle medical bills and lack of beds and other facilities. "Trauma care is expensive and patients must be aware in order to settle bills," he said. He urged Ghanaians to register with the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) since accidents or emergencies were covered by the scheme.
