International Day for Women in Maritime: High school students mentored

The Ghana Chapter of Professional Women in Maritime and Port Sectors for West and Central Africa (NPWMP- WCA GH), ahead of the International Day for Women in Maritime met with aspiring female professionals – to encourage them to follow their dreams.

The Professional Association, organized a mentorship session with senior high students from the Tema Manhean Secondary School to guide them towards their career goals and ambitions.

The program was also an opportunity to demystify the maritime industry to students, where, selected professionals in the technical fields of the industry spoke extensively about their jobs.

According to the President of the Network, Abena Serwaa Opoku Fosu, the objectives of the Network of Professional Women in Maritime and Port Sectors of West and Central Africa are to establish resource groups for friendship, cooperation, knowledge sharing, and mentoring as well as personal development.

“The International Maritime Organization Champions gender equality. The Women in Maritime program focuses on three pillars, training, visibility, and recognition.

One of the core objectives of the network of Professional Women in Maritime and Port Sectors of West Africa is to create a resource group for mentorship and personal growth through cooperation friendship exchange of knowledge and the dissemination of information and we encourage girls to pursue their passion, break stereotypes and explore Maritime careers” she stated.

Director of Education for the Tema Metropolis, Bernice Ofori her remarks urged females to honour the progress made in advancing gender equality in maritime vocations by reaffirming their commitment to supporting women in the maritime industry and advocating for policies and procedures that advance gender equality.

“Today, we celebrate the progress that has been made in advancing gender equality in maritime careers. More women than ever are pursuing education and training in maritime fields. On this day, let us all renew our commitment to empowering women in the maritime industry” she said.

As part of the intended impact of the program, 10 female students have been selected to undergo tailored mentorship with selected professionals ahead of their tertiary education.
