The Tema Metropolitan Chief Executive, Yohane Amarh-Ashitey, has flaunted Ghana’s fast-paced internet penetration as one of the outstanding achievements of the Akufo-Addo/Bawumia government, that dwarfs the achievements of former President John Dramani Mahama.
In a write-up on social media, Amarh-Ashitey also said this achievement is one of the many that scared former President John Mahama from accepting the challenge to debate Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.
“In terms of internet penetration alone, the Bawumia/Akufo-Addo government has improved it, 48% more than what the government inherited from the John Mahama government in 2017,” Yohane Amarh Ashitey wrote.
Citing verifiable data from the online statistical analyses site, Statista, he pointed out that this achievement has brought many more Ghanaians onto the cyber platform, where many opportunities exist for self-improvement and development already.
“When Dr. Bawumia and Akufo-Addo inherited the country from John Mahama in 2017, internet penetration was a paltry 28%; however, as of January 2024, this had improved to a whopping 69.8%,” he wrote.
The Tema MCE was quick to emphasize that “the 69.8% penetration is the statistics that pertained as of January 2024; in August 2024, I have heard that the percentage has increased even further,” he wrote.
According to available statistics, Ghana’s internet connectivity as of 2023 was already high, with internet subscriptions rising to over 22.8 million.
The penetration rate has since also been pegged at 71.94% by some experts.
Whatever the figure, the increase in rate has been phenomenal, from less than 30% in 2017 to more than 70% in 2024.
“When we talk of development, real tangible progress, this is what we mean; that the change in the lives of people can be really and truly measured,” the MCE wrote reiterating that this is why Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia will easily win the election in December.
