The Ghana Academy of Muslim Professionals (GAMP) has commenced its annual M. A. Mujahid Ramadan lectures series with a focus on topics around Islamic banking and finance throughout this year's Ramadan.
On February 15, 2026, GAMP successfully held its first lecture at the Dr. Hilla Liman Technical University in Wa, with speaker and Chartered Accountant by profession, Baba Yunus Alhassan, presenting on the topic: "How can Islamic microfinance serve as an effective tool for poverty reduction and SME growth."
He took attendees through a range of topics from Islamic microfinance, banking, finance, insurance, Zakat, and Waqf and corporate zakat. Key highlights included discussions on Ghana's Zakat potential, estimated at GHC2.6 billion annually.
Attendees, from the university students, GAMP representatives and members of the general public described the event as insightful and that it had left a lasting impact on them.
GAMP's theme for this year's lectures "Islamic Finance and Social Justice: Pathway to Poverty Reduction and SME Empowerment in Ghana," is strategic in the sense that it helps with the wider Islamic finance advocacy at a time Ghana is getting ready for a rollout of the industry.
The Wa event sets the tone for three more events in Sunyani, Takoradi, and Accra.
The lecture will be shared globally in multiple languages, including French, German, Russian, Chinese, and in major Ghanaian languages like Twi, Ga, and Hausa, GAMP has announced.
Ghana's Islamic finance strides
Ghana has in the last few years made significant strides in the area of advocacy for the adoption of Islamic finance (non-interest banking and finance).
The Bank of Ghana (BoG) in January 2026 published final guidelines for the upcoming industry with modalities for the rollout of banking windows and full-fledged banks.
Lead advocacy groups like the Islamic Finance Research Institute of Ghana (IFRIG) continue to lead advocacy efforts through a series of activities aimed at securing a smooth take off for the industry.
