The Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) has signed a sister-city agreement with authorities of the Wenzhou Municipality in China.

The agreement, which was completed in Kumasi, is aimed at boosting trade and business partnership between the two cities, with additional opportunities for individuals to travel and study in Wenzhou on scholarships.

The arrangement is also aimed at enhancing collaboration between the two cities in the areas of commerce and technology. At the ceremony to seal the agreement, which was signed on Tuesday, June 14, the CEO for the KMA, Kojo Bonsu, said the partnership would help businesses and traders in the region.

“We are going to bring the businesspeople in Kumasi and Wenzhou together to form a synergy. This relationship will also [bring] together the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology and the Wenzhou University with scholarships provided for the people of Kumasi to go and learn in Wenzhou,” he disclosed.

“They will also bring technologies that are not available to Kumasi and help build the city to make it more beautiful. We will sign an agreement with one of their companies to come and build a multi-storey car park in Kumasi. I hope the people of Kumasi will take advantage of this new partnership.”

On his part, the Chairman of the Wenzhou Municipal Government, Mr. Xu Liyi pledged that manufacturing, as well as science and technology of both cities, would be greatly improved.

“In recent years, economic and trade cooperation between Wenzhou and Africa is developing very fast. Wenzhou businesses are spreading to several places in Africa and the continent has become the number one import market for Wenzhou,” he stated.

Mr. Xu added: “The economies of Wenzhou and Kumasi are complementary to each other and we can cooperate in different areas including human resource, technology, and marketing. We are happy that Kumasi is attracting many businesses and we will keep this trend together and work closely to improve production of the two parties.”
