Market women who sell fante kenkey [fanti dokono] at the Sekondi Market in the Western region have lamented the low patronage of kenkey in recent times.

According to them, due to the economic hardship in the country, it has affected kenkey sales, adding, “now the price of maize has increased and the leaves we use to package the fante kenkey has also expensive.”

They disclosed that the cost of a bag of fresh maize is GHC200.00 whiles the one stored for a longer period now costs GHC280.00.

According to them, they used to sell a ball of fante kenkey at 20GHp and 50GHp which boosted their sales but with the current increment of kenkey from the above prices to GHC1.00 and GHc2.00 respectively, the patronage has dipped.

Speaking to Today in an interview, some of the kenkey sellers expressed worry about the situation.

They, therefore, called on the government to have a re-look at the economic situation in the country and do something about it.
