The Ministry of Education and Korea Eximbank recently signed a Project Concept Paper (PCP) for the establishment of University of Environment and Sustainable Development (UESD) in Accra. The PCP outlines the framework of UESD before commencement of Feasibility Study.

A mission from Korea Eximbank and Sangmyung University visited Ghana from 5th to 8th of June, 2017 to develop the project concept and discuss the direction and guidelines for conducting the Feasibility Study with their Ghanaian counterpart.

The Ministry of Education and Korea Eximbank reached the agreement that EDCF will provide 70 million US Dollars for UESD project, with the main campus of the UESD to be located at Bunso in the Eastern Region. The faculties will include school of agriculture and agro-entrepreneurship; and school of Engineering and Technology.

The government of Ghana has been seeking to establish at least one full-scale public university, distinct from technical universities, in each of the ten administrative regions of the country. The Eastern Region does not presently have a full-scale public university hence the priority accorded the Project.

The UESD Bunso when established will focus firstly on satisfying the human resource demand from Ghana’s local and national industries. The UESD Bunso is also being established in response to the current national focus of food security and agro-industry as important growth nodes in the economy of the nation.

The University will provide leadership in the teaching, research and public outreach across a number of fields and will help address problems that affect our food security and enhance future competitiveness of Ghana’s industries, in a sustainable manner. And the students will be equipped with concepts and skills in modern science and technology and relevant knowledge and will be encouraged to engage communities to test models.

Dr. Park Hung Kook, Professor in Sangmyung University and Specialist for the Project said “I would like to express my sincere gratitude to Hon. Minister of Education, Deputy Minister of Finance, and Minister of State (Tertiary) that they received us with hospitality and gave us full support so that we will be able to reach an agreement based on mutual cooperation and understanding. We could perform our mission successfully during our short stay in Ghana by support of the Ministry of Education.

“I am sure that we can implement UESD Bunso Project successfully because I noticed that Ghanaian government has strong willingness to develop educational sector for the future of Ghana.” He promised to visit Ghana soon to launch F/S for the Project in July, 2017.”

Sangmyung University is a renowned educational institution in the field of engineering and technology in Korea.
