Kosmos on track on local content

Kosmos Energy, a leading oil and gas exploration and production company has attained a 100 per cent local content in its 11 years of operation in Ghana.

All 52 employees heading and working in the Company’s finance, commercial and corporate social responsibility units in Ghana are Ghanaians, Mr Philip Liverpool, Director, Commercial, Komos Energy said on Wednesday.

He was addressing a day’s training for editors on “The Gas Economy and Opportunities for Ghana”.

The workshop was held under Kosmos Energy Ghana/Ghana News Agency collaboration.

Mr Liverpool said though oil and gas sector does not employ many people due to its technical nature, Kosmos believed in empowering the locals to develop their confidence to become experts in the sector.

“We have confidence in Ghanaians. It’s been great so far. They understand the local terrain and we want to develop the people as much as possible,” he stated.

Mr Liverpool cited for instance the Company’s independent Advisory Council of ‘respected Ghanaian’ business leaders who were helping the Company understand the national and local dynamics for the needed investment in the country’s developing economy.

Dr. Bernard Otabil, Chief Executive Officer, Ghana News Agency (GNA) commended Kosmos for demonstrating confidence in the Ghanaian and underscored the need for Ghanaians in higher positions to mentor workers under them for sustainable leadership.

“Mentorship in corporate leadership is key; this is what we must be doing. We must learn to work with young people and pick creative ideas from them because mentors also need mentors,” he stated.

Mr Joe Mensah, Country Director, Kosmos Energy reiterated the Company’s commitment to engaging the media and the public to create a shared agenda mutually beneficial to the Company and Ghana.

An investigation by the GNA indicated that about 7,000 people were employed in the oil and gas sector in the country out of which 80 per cent were Ghanaians.
