The United Kingdom High Commissioner to Ghana, Iain Walker, says Kumasi will soon be transformed into a hub for trading activity.

At a press-conference ahead of the UK-Africa Investment Summit in Accra, Iain Walker said some additional £40 million would be invested into the Kumasi Airport expansion project, which will formally be announced on January 20 in London.

“A strong Ghana is in UK’s interest,” Mr. Walker said.

The UK government invested £56.8 million to further expand the Kumasi Airport which would see a new terminal and multiple facilities.

Mr. Walker said government is focused on expanding the Airport because Kumasi would be a leading industrial hub which will result in an increase in passenger traffic.

Phase II of the airport expansion project is to be completed in the second half of 2020.

Projects in the Ashanti Region also include investments of more than £200 million for the Kumasi Kejetia Redevelopment Project and £130 million to improve the Bekwai Hospital.

The UK-Ghana strategic partnership, which was signed in July last year under the UK-Ghana Business Council (UK-GBC), is focused on six priority sectors which would improve Ghana and the UK’s long term relationship and continue to focus on Kumasi’s development.

The Ghana and UK government will prioritize industrialization, agriculture and infrastructure in the Ashanti Region.
