The Industrial and Commercial Workers Union (ICU) says it is disappointed that government ignored their concerns, appointed and confirmed Ofosu Asamoah as the executive secretary of the Labour Commission.

Charles Adongo Bawa Duah who was the executive secretary of the Commission was removed from his position by the Akufo-Addo government. Such removals, the Union said could politicise the executive secretary position of the Commission and also undermine smooth negotiations between government and labour.

Following the removal of Mr Bawa Duah, Ofosu Asamoah was appointed by the presidency as the new executive secretary of the Commission, despite pleas by the ICU against such appointment.

Three weeks after, Mr Ofosu Asamoah has been confirmed, but this the ICU has described as unfair. General Secretary of ICU, Solomon Kotei, said such removals could politicise the executive secretary’s position.

Meanwhile, the ICU has lauded government for re-activating the taskforce to check cheap imports of textiles into the markets. The Union asked government to be prompt in reducing cost of tariffs to boost business confidence. On the three per cent VAT flat rate, the ICU has asked the Finance Ministry to conduct broader consultations before implementation.
