Elmina (W/R), May 30, GNA - The proposed dredging of the Benya Lagoon and construction of a fishing harbour at Elmina are expected to attract investments of more than 100 million dollars from the private sector, Dr Kwesi Nduom, MP for Komenda-Edina-Eguafo-Abrem said on Tuesday.
A concessionary loan agreement of 12.55 Euros has already been signed by the government for remedial dredging of the lagoon and breakwater rehabilitation to make way for construction of the fishing harbour.
Addressing the first ordinary meeting of the district assembly at Elmina on Tuesday, Dr Nduom said the Belgium and Dutch governments had expressed interest in the projects.
He held that the projects would be the "single biggest social investment" in the district, and would create more jobs and generate income for the people.
However the lagoon must be properly maintained after dredging to make it possible for the construction of the fishing harbour to take off, he added.
Dr Nduom, who is also Minister of Public Sector Reform, appealed to the assembly members to close their ranks and evolve measures that would ensure the sustenance of the lagoon after dredging.
"We must work on every project selflessly with only what is good for our people in mind".
He underscored the importance of peace and unity for accelerated development and urged the people to "leave their mark in the sands of time" for posterity.
The District Chief Executive, Mr George Frank Asmah, said the two projects would help boost socio-economic development of the area and urged all stakeholders to ensure their successful implementation.
