The Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, Nii Osah Mills, has visited the Obuasi Mine to get firsthand information and experience on the efforts the company is making to get to the deeps to improve its operations after the care and maintenance period.

The Obuasi Mine has recently retrenched over 4000 employees due to production challenges the mine is facing, with other problems; and has entered into care and maintenance to refurbish the mine.

The Minister visited the deeps against the backdrop of the company’s desire to develop and improve the mine to enhance its operations.

Speaking to the media after the visit, Mr Mills described as “tremendous” the manner in which the company was implementing its plans to resuscitate the mine.

“So far, I am happy with the steps they have taken in its implementation of its objective,” he said. “The plans for redeveloping the mine is going as scheduled.”

The Minister discussed his plans to deal with illegal mining (galamsey), saying that the country at the moment was confronted with a big challenge of galamsey that was having a negative impact on the economy.

The three-day tour would see the Minister interacting with some mining communities to know their concerns and how they could be addressed to bring harmony between them and the company.

Mr Mills also announced the Ministry’s determination to dialogue with the leadership of the galamsayers on the way forward.
