Let's join hands to salvage local textiles industry - Subin MP

Kumasi, Aug. 7, GNA - The Member of Parliament (MP) for Subin, Mr Isaac Osei has called on all Ghanaians to join hands to prevent the local textile industry from collapsing through the importation of cheap textiles.

He cited that the Akosombo Textiles Limited (ATL), which has the capacity to provide about 5,000 jobs, currently employs 1,500 people. Mr Osei was speaking at a forum, organised to educate the people of Subin constituency on how Parliament operates and for the MP to listen to their concerns so that he could articulate them on the floor of the House, in Kumasi.

He asked traders to stop aiding foreign companies to imitate Ghanaian print designs and urged the Customs, Excise and Preventive Service (CEPS) to intensify efforts to check smuggling of wax prints. Mr Osei, who serves on the Parliamentary Committee on Trade, Industry and Tourism, asked New Patriotic Party (NPP) supporters to unite to enable the party to come back to power. He was accompanied by Madam Catherine Afeku, MP for Evalue-Gwira, Mr Kwabena Darko-Mensah, MP for Takoradi and Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh, MP for Manhyia.

They educated the people on the economy, health and education and called on New Patriotic Party (NPP) supporters to unite. Madam Afeku announced that a total of GH¢760 million had been accrued from the talk tax as of March, this year. 8 Aug 09
