Let' tap economic potentials for Brong Ahafo - Dr Biney

Sunyani, April 20, GNA - Dr Franklin Kwesi Biney, a civil society rights activist, has called on civil society to seek a new approach on how untapped economic potentials of Brong Ahafo can be harnessed for economic development.

In a press statement released on Monday, Dr Biney noted that "Brong Ahafo is a highly productive region, where the engine of wealth generation is operating to help eradicate the scourge of abject poverty and engender regional prosperity".

He said civil society could only be effective when there was socio- political culture to infuse in human beings to become more responsible for their conduct and the way they should go about their businesses. "We need to focus on how we can inject in ourselves and in our society a new sense of responsibility for each other and how civil society can build a new regional-political culture that is supportive of the culture of responsibility," he explained.

Dr Biney stated that civil society had a unique opportunity to help build a new kind of society to demonstrate that 'non governmentalism' could be effectively responsible for the economic potentials of the region to be harnessed for the speedy development and promotion. The civil society rights activist was of the view that an effective and sound public and private sector would depend on the existence of a very dynamic civil society and strong citizen's involvement in both private and public sector, he added. Dr Biney said different levels of access to power and economic resources can be found within the civil society organizations in the region. He emphasised that major effort in supporting the enabling environment for civil engagement and civil society capacity development should be the focus of the civil society network in supporting the poor and other groups to develop their own presence in the policy-making process, service and good delivery for economic development.
