MTN Ghana Foundation to undertake health and education programmes

Kumasi, May 15, GNA - Mr. Malcom Frazier Appeadu, co-ordinator of the MTN Ghana Foundation, has said that the Foundation has focused on undertaking health and education projects to improve the quality of life of Ghanaians. He noted that the Foundation, which was an umbrella body established within he MTN Group, has been charged with the responsibility of directing and managing the company's co-operate social responsibility activities in MTN catchment areas. Mr. Appeadu was speaking at the opening of a day's proposal writing workshop, organised by the Foundation for 50 participants in Kumasi on Thursday.

The event, which attracted participants from the Ashanti and Brong Ahafo Regions, aimed at equipping them with techniques in proposal writing to enable the Foundation to support communities, institutions and other groups implementing projects. He said since 1993, the Foundation had undertaken projects, including refurbishment of a maternity block of Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital to support the government agenda to reduce maternal mortality rate in the country.

Mr. Appeadu also said the projects would also help in the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). He said the Foundation has also initiated a scholarship scheme to assist n brilliant but needy students and t 800 students have already benefited from the scheme. Mr. Appeadu said the Foundation has worked with the Ghana Education Service (GES) to sponsor the National Best Teachers' awards for the last two years.

He asked the participants to ensure that proposals included the name of the projects, title, date, address and contact numbers of promoters as well as a clear and concise summary of the project. Mr. Appeadu noted that goals and objective of the project should also be outlined together with the cost involved in the execution and the time earmarked. Mr. Robert Kuzoe, Senior Manager of MTN Ghana Foundation, said the workshop was aimed at explaining the initiatives of the Foundation since its inception to the participants He pledged that the Foundation would continue to play its social responsibility role and urged institutions and communities which needed support to submit proposals early for screening. 15 May 09
