The General Manager said although MoMo had come a long way with many positive stories, there was still a lot more to be done in dealing with the menace of social engineering, which creates fraud situations.

He said the company would continue its efforts at educating the masses through the media as it had already trained the media, the police and the judiciary to better understand how the system works to help in curbing fraud.

The MTN Ghana officially launched the MoMo service on July 21, 2009, with the Governor of the Bank of Ghana at the time, Mr Paul Acquah, and with Bruno Akpaka, the first General Manager.

He said: “We hit the ground running with the catchy commercial which caught the attention of most people and the phrase ‘Minsa aka” became associated with the service.

He said beyond financial inclusion, the introduction of MoMo into the Ghanaian payment system has created employment for thousands of people, adding that, “As at the end of May this year, the number of active Mobile Money agents stood at 124,000 and over 5,000 mobile canvassers.”

Mr Hini said the Service had succeeded in reducing the long queues to make payments for products and services and had assisted in relieving people of the burden of walking to look for cash.

Mr Selorm Adadevoh, the Chief Executive Officer of MTN Ghana commended stakeholders for making the MoMo service thrive and promised a better delivery of service to all subscribers in the coming years.
