MTN Ghana has launched the “MTN Mobile Money School Fees Payment Service” to enable parents pay the school fees of their wards from anywhere across the country.
Mr Eric Nsarkoh, Sales and Distribution Executives, MTN Ghana, speaking at the launch of the service in Accra on Tuesday said MTN has also provided schools that have opted for the service with a reliable platform to be able to monitor all transactions that would be made and to be able to get the funds settled at their preferred bank accounts for easy reconciliation.
He said so far about 30 senior high schools and three tertiary institutions have enrolled onto the school fees platform, expressing the hope that a lot more schools would join to promote Ghana’s desired cashless economy.
He said the company has also rolled out a special promotion dubbed: “Back to School Promo,” to reward wards of parents, who pay their fees through the platform.
“Three senior high schools will also be rewarded for signing on and promoting the service,” he added.
Mr Nsarkoh said the impact of Mobile Money service to the economic growth of the country could not be underestimated, indicating that apart from the convenience it creates for individual customers, it is a cheaper and safer way of transferring money.
He said more than one million active MTN Mobile Money customers are on the network with more than 7.5 million transactions recorded on monthly basis.
The Sales and Distribution Executives said the Mobile Money service has become major source of employment and income for many people.
“We currently have recorded over ten thousand Ghanaians, who serve as merchants in all the districts, towns and villages across the country,” he said.
Mr Eli Hini, Commercial Senior Manager, MTN Ghana said a parent, who uses the service to pay the fees of their wards would be rewarded.
He said the top three schools with the highest payment recorded would also be rewarded with printers and personal computers.
Mr Samuel Ofori-Adjei, President of Conference of Heads of Assisted Secondary Schools urged management of MTN Ghana to create a back-up system for the service in case of technological challenges.
He expressed the hope that the service would resolve some of the problems associated with payment of school fees.
