Telecom giant, MTN Ghana, has extended its coverage of wireless mobile telephony to include 130 unserved communities in nine regions across the country as part of the rollout for 2017.

The regional breakdown of the new cell sites is as follows: Ashanti - 16, Brong Ahafo - 22, Central - 24, Eastern - 16 Northern - 9 Upper East - 2 , Upper West - 14 , Volta - 11, Western - 16.

Furthermore, an additional 185 sites are at different stages of completion and will be going live within the next three months. This is in partnership with the Ghana Infrastructure Fund for Electronic Communications (GIFEC). The project is aimed at extending the coverage of wireless mobile telephone services as far as possible into all areas of the country.

Through the rural telephony project, mobile telephone coverage has been extended to communities with no access to telecommunication for mobile telephony and mobile financial services.

Speaking to the development, the Ag. CEO of MTN Modupe Kadiri said, “at MTN we know and understand that everyone deserves the benefits of a connected world. To this end we are committed to brightening the lives of every Ghanaian living in the country whether the location is commercially viable or not”.

The plan to extend rural telephony to more underserved and unserved communities in Ghana requires the commitment of all telecom partners and MTN Ghana continues to demonstrate this through innovative solutions.

MTN Ghana, however, is looking beyond profit making and believes that everyone deserves the benefits of a modern connected life, continues to champion the delivery of rural telephony in deprived areas across the country. The intervention will bridge the digital divide between the served and underserved while enhancing economic activities in rural communities.

Over the past years, MTN has more than doubled the number of Mobile Base Transceiver Stations across the country with close to 3,000 cell sites. We have invested over US$3.472 billion in our network infrastructure, including expanding our 3G network, deploying more fiber backbone and metro, deployment of fiber to the home, connecting to more international undersea cables, building world-class facilities and putting in place green initiatives for long-term sustainability.

MTN Ghana is committed to providing the best mobile services and enhanced customer experience. As such we would like to assure our valued customers of our commitment to the social contract we have with them. Brightening the lives of our customers through the benefits of ICT and our social investments represent MTN’s mission.
