MTN voice subscribers hit 17.8M

Leading telephony services provider in Ghana, MTN, has hit a total of about 17,817,273 voice subscriptions as at the end of September 2017, Senior Manager in-charge of Sustainability and Social Impact at MTN, Mrs Georgina Asare-Fiagbenu, has disclosed.

The figure, according to her, represents a percentage increase of 0.58% from the August 2017 figure of 17,715,212, adding that MTN’s market share for the month of September was 47.58%,

Consequently, she stated that MTN Ghana’s data subscribers have also hit 11.2 million, an achievement, he stressed, has strengthened the company’s commercial position as the leading mobile data services provider in the country.

Speaking in an interview with Today on the sidelines during a breakfast meeting with members of Journalists for Business Advocacy (JBA) in Accra recently, Mrs Asare-Fiagbenu pointed out that out of the above subscribers, 370,000 were 4G customers.

She thus called on Ghanaians to continue to patronise the data services of MTN.

The meeting was to update members of the JBA on activities of MTN Ghana Foundation for the 10 years of driving the company’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) projects and programmes in the country.

According to her, as part of celebrating MTN’s 10 years of operations in Ghana, the Foundation has demonstrated its commitment and readiness to launch a comprehensive education scholarship scheme package in 2018 to reward a total of 300 tertiary students.

“We have approved a fund to offer scholarships to students in tertiary institutions. So this scholarship scheme will be awarded to 300 students in a period of three years across the country. Every year, 100 students are expected to benefit from the scheme. And the scheme will help to take burdens of the beneficiaries,” she explained.

Additionally, Mrs Asare-Fiagbenu asserted that the intended scholarship packages would strictly, be given to students in public universities, adding that it will cover the full cost of tuition, accommodation and books.

She revealed that the Foundation over the years has awarded scholarships to over 1000 students across the country with about 50 beneficiaries currently working with MTN as full-time employees, national service personnel and interns.
